PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Hyoscine butylbromide exerts a local antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles of internal organs (the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tract, and urinary tract) and reduces the secretion of digestive glands.
The local antispasmodic effect is explained by the ganglion-blocking and antimuscarinic activity of the medicinal product. As a quaternary ammonium derivative, hyoscine butylbromide does not cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB); therefore, it has no anticholinergic effect on the central nervous system.
The medicinal product begins to exert its antispasmodic effect approximately 15 minutes after administration.
The mean bioavailability is less than 1%. After a single oral administration of hyoscine butylbromide at doses of 20–400 mg, maximum plasma concentrations (Cmax) are reached approximately after 2 hours.
